The government has formed a four-member committee led by Attorney-General Idrus Harun to probe into an incident where a top government official allegedly hurled abusive remarks at an immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last week.

Other committee members comprise Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (above, second from left), Auditor-General Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid (above, second from right), and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki (above, first from right), said Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement.

“The committee is responsible to carry out a detailed investigation and ensure fairness for both parties.

“The outcome and recommendations from the probe will be submitted to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for further consideration,” said Zuki, adding that the committee will be convening its first meeting soon.

Ismail Sabri yesterday said the cabinet has instructed Zuki to set up an internal committee to investigate the incident that implicated Public Service Department director-general Mohd Shafiq Abdullah for allegedly verbally abusing an immigration officer.

The Public Service Department in a statement on Aug 4 denied the allegations against Shafiq and explained that he only reprimanded immigration officers at the KLIA for not adhering to the stipulated practices and procedures.

The alleged incident prompted outcries from various parties including the Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia, which represents 14,000 officers and called for action to be taken against Shafiq.
