6 MPs who defected from Umno will allegedly hang up boots - report

Six MPs who defected from Umno to join Bersatu will reportedly not defend their seats in the next general election.

According to Utusan Malaysia, they are Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya (above), Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Abd Rahim Bakri (Kudat), Fasiah Fakeh (Sabak Bernam), Azizah Mohd Dun (Beaufort) and Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang).

The Malay daily’s report did not cite any sources. Malaysiakini is attempting to reach the six for comments.

Members of this group were either appointed as deputy ministers or government agency heads, with the exception of Azizah whose only other position is Public Accounts Committee (PAC) deputy chairperson - an unsalaried job.

Since 2018, there were 16 MPs who defected from Umno to Bersatu when the latter was part of the Pakatan Harapan administration.

According to the report, three defectors are keen to defend their seats - Mustapa Mohamed (Jeli), Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), and Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu).

Of the three, Mustapa, 71, is the most senior. He is a five-term MP for Jeli, having suffered only one defeat in 1999. He is also the minister in the Prime Minister's Department for economic affairs.
