Umno demands answers on ‘leaked’ investigation on SRC case judge

Umno has urged the MACC and the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to respond to a document purported to be the leaked MACC investigation paper on the judge who had convicted Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak.

According to Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan (above), the document has been circulating online and says there is an offence under Section 220 of the Penal Code.

He urged the MACC to confirm or deny the veracity of the document, and the AGC to announce any follow-up action on the investigation.

“The integrity of our hallowed institutions must be safeguarded, and Umno hopes the MACC and the AGC will explain this issue to the people in the near future,” he said in a statement today.

This is considering the Federal Court’s refusal to allow former prime minister Najib to admit “new evidence” in the appeal against his conviction, and it has been three months since the MACC had completed the investigation, he said.

Section 220 pertains judges who “corruptly or maliciously commits any person for trial or to confinement” knowing that they are doing so in violation of the law. Upon conviction, the offence is punishable with up to seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both.

In 2020, then High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and RM210 million fine for corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering. Nazlan has since been promoted to the Court of Appeal.

Najib’s legal team have sought to discredit Nazlan by claiming that he has a conflict of interest arising from his previous employment as a general counsel at Maybank.

On May 21, the MACC said it has completed its investigation on the matter and has submitted it to the AGC for further action. Attorney-General Idrus Harun told Malaysiakini on May 23 that he was still studying the investigation paper.

The Federal Court ruled on Tuesday it found no conflict of interest in the matter, but the ruling was criticised by Umno’s top leaders.
