Take action against Hadi, TI-M urges authorities

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's remark branding non-Muslims and non-bumiputera as “roots for corruption” is not only racist but potentially seditious, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Muhammad Mohan said.

As such, he urged the authorities to take action against the leader for making such an irresponsible statement.

“The police and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must act on this matter.

"As we commemorate our country’s independence this month, it is both sad and shameful to hear the baseless and provocative comments made by the PAS president," Muhammad (above) said in a statement today.

Two days ago, Hadi said that corruption should be tackled from its roots and alleged that most graft cases involved non-bumiputera and non-Muslims.

"If not tackled, it will eventually become a disease. These groups who chase after illicit gains are the ones who eventually control the economy.

“They then damage our politics and a majority of them are non-Muslims and non-bumiputera," the Marang MP was reported as saying.

The PAS leader also went on to say that qualifications were not important compared to the path of integrity one could lead as a Muslim.

Training his guns on Hadi, Muhammad urged the former to provide proof to substantiate his allegations.

"We want to know the sources and data behind his claim. They smack of a narrow, myopic view of corruption and provoke feelings which are in direct antithesis to the prime minister’s Malaysian Family concept.

"Such comments made in a multi-racial and multi-faith democracy is deplorable, racist, slanderous and potentially seditious," he added.

Muhammad then urged Malaysians and elected leaders to fight graft using an evidence-based approach and avoid making sweeping statements.

“Corruption is colour blind and it affects us all," he said.
