Kit Siang insists not contesting in Bakri, says Hasni 'purveying fake info'

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has dismissed rumours that he will contest the Bakri parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15), stressing that he is retired from competitive politics.

"I do not know where Hasni got his information, but he is proving to be an atrocious political leader and strategist, purveying fake and false information," Lim said in a statement today, in reference to Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad (above).

Hasni had reportedly on Monday said that he received information about a DAP meeting where the 81-year-old Lim allegedly said he would "possibly contest in Bakri".

Commenting further, Lim said the DAP and Pakatan Harapan must be thankful that Hasni is the Umno leader in Johor who believes in such misinformation.

"For Hasni’s information, I have retired from competitive politics and I am not aware of any recent DAP meeting allegedly to discuss my candidature for Bakri parliamentary seat in the 15th general election."

For the record, the Bakri seat is currently held by DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin.

Lim announced his retirement at the DAP's national congress last March, stressing that he would not compete in any general or state elections, as well as at the central committee level, in the future.

In his political career spanning more than five decades, Lim had served as the MP for various seats, beginning with Bandar Melaka (1969–1974), Kota Melaka (1974–1978), Petaling (1978–1982), Kota Melaka (1982–1986), Tanjong (1986–1999), Ipoh Timor (2004–2013), and Gelang Patah (2013-2018).

He has been the MP for Iskandar Puteri (renamed from Gelang Patah).
