Madius steps down as Upko president, names VP as successor

Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau today announced that he will not defend his presidential post in the party election next month.

He named vice-president Ewon Benedick, who is also running for the presidency, as his successor to the multiracial, Sabah-based party.

“I have decided not to defend the president’s post. I would like to announce that the party will be led by Benedick, who is also the vice-president and Kadamaian state assemblyperson,” he said.

He was speaking during a special conference at the party’s headquarters in Penampang, Sabah, today.

Madius, who is the Tuaran MP, said the decision for a new party leader was decided after a review process.

“The decision to put forward a new leader was decided unanimously after reviewing the potential new leaders to helm the party.

“I am confident that the new leadership led by Benedick will ensure Upko remains focused and committed as a local party fighting for the state and people’s interests, especially in the current political scenario.

“We are aware of the political instability in the country with the next general election looming. In view of this, Upko must formulate a new strategy to continue to fight for the interests of the people,” he said.

Madius also announced that he will seek to defend his parliamentary seat in the next general election.

Upko will hold its triennial congress and party election on Oct 15 and 16.

Madius, 64, was appointed as acting president in 2014 following the retirement of Bernard Dompok and was elected president in 2018.

Upko, under Madius’ leadership, decided to quit BN after the 2018 general election and joined Warisan Plus. Upko is now one of four component parties of the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

Madius will be appointed as party honorary president.
