PN ministers petition Agong to hold off polls

Twelve cabinet ministers from Perikatan Nasional have petitioned the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to not allow the election this year due to flood risks.

According to reports by The Star, this was confirmed by Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Tuan Ibrahim said the letter to Istana Negara was sent last night after the PN leaders met.

Umno's top brass have been clamouring for a fresh parliamentary election to be held this year.

However, opponents believe that the polls should only be held next year after the northeast monsoon season (November to March) has passed.

This was because the monsoon brought heavy flooding last year and the situation was expected to be worse this year.

The term of the current Parliament only expires in July next year.

The law allows the prime minister to advise the Agong to dissolve Parliament sooner.

However, the law also permits Agong to withhold consent to dissolution.
