Harapan seeks flood relief volunteers

Pakatan Harapan will begin recruiting volunteers to help flood victims, according to its mobilisation bureau head Mohamad Sabu.

Mohamad said this was in response to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree two days ago for everyone to prepare for the year-end flood season.

In a statement today, Mohamad said there had already been recent reports that rivers in various parts of the country are rising.

“This situation requires the attention of all. Disasters caused by climate change cannot be normalised and greeted as a ‘festival’.

“What happened at the end of last year should make us realise that tens of thousands of Malaysians will become victims and millions in property will be lost.

“The trauma (of that tragedy) is still being felt today,” he said.

Between December 2021 and January this year, flooding resulted in 54 deaths and two victims are reportedly still missing.

Various forecasts have expected the flooding to be even worse this year due to the La Nina phenomenon.

Extreme weather events in Europe, China, and Pakistan in the middle of this year which either resulted in drought or floods were also attributed by experts to climate change.

Mohamad said application forms for Harapan’s flood volunteers will be made available soon.

He said Harapan will also be working with any other groups that are willing to lend their expertise or flood relief aid.
