Sultan Nazrin consents to dissolving Perak state assembly - MB

Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has consented to the dissolution of the state legislative assembly effective today, said Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad.

Saarani was granted an audience with the ruler last Wednesday to seek Sultan Nazrin’s consent to dissolve the state assembly.

However, the assembly was kept intact at the time as the ruler deliberated on the proposal.

Saarani was summoned for another audience with Sultan Nazrin last Friday.

“The letter on the declaration of the dissolution of the state assembly effective today was obtained on Sunday,” Saarani told a media conference in Tapah today, according to Bernama.

The application for the dissolution was in accordance with Clause 2 Article 36 Part One of Perak’s constitution, he added.

Perak has 59 state seats, of which 25 are held by BN, followed by DAP (15), Amanah (five), Bersatu (four), PAS (three), PKR (three), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (three), and independent (one).

Perak is the third BN-controlled state to dissolve the state assembly, after Pahang and Perlis on Friday.

Caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob dissolved Parliament on Oct 10 and urged other states to follow suit except for Sabah, Sarawak, Malacca and Johor.

However, states under Pakatan Harapan - Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan - as well as PAS, namely Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu, decided they will not dissolve their state assemblies.
