Ismail Sabri: No pressure on Umno divisions to support me as PM

Caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said there was no pressure from anyone for the Umno divisions to declare their support for him as prime minister.

The divisions were merely following the party supreme council’s earlier decision to name him as Umno’s candidate for prime minister if BN wins the 15th general election (GE15), he added.

“The divisions are free to make whatever motions and I thank the divisions.

“I was made to understand that 152 divisions called a motion to support me as the prime minister candidate after GE15.

“This is based on the supreme council’s decision, the supreme council had earlier decided in their meeting to name me as the prime minister (if BN wins in GE15),” Ismail Sabri told reporters after attending the officiation of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association’s (PKMM) annual general meeting at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today.

It was earlier reported that Umno divisional meetings held last weekend saw almost all 191 divisions pass the motion to support Ismail Sabri as prime minister.

On April 14, the Umno supreme council unanimously proposed Ismail Sabri as the party’s PM candidate for GE15.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also reported as saying that Ismail Sabri will remain as BN’s poster boy and PM candidate in GE15 and that the coalition’s stand on this would not change if BN succeeded in getting to administer from Putrajaya.
