Dr M: My stand on cooperation ala GE14 unchanged, but what of others?

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his stand on opposition cooperation to defeat Umno, as in the 2018 polls, remains unchanged.

However, he is unsure if other opposition parties have the same view this time around.

In a statement yesterday, Mahathir clarified that his previous video on making the first move to cooperate with Anwar Ibrahim was explaining the context and situation of what happened in 2018.

"So it does not arise that I want to or don't want to work with other opposition leaders this time, because (my) principles (on cooperation) are unchanged.

"What I am not sure of is if other opposition leaders have changed their minds and feelings towards Umno.

"I am also unsure if opposition leaders still feel that Umno will destroy the country if they return to power and put kleptocrats in office," he added.

‘It is up to them’

Hence, Mahathir said this time around, he has not initiated any moves except with those who think like him.

“For other opposition leaders, this time it is up to them," he said.

The nonagenarian is the leader of a new coalition dubbed Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA).

Besides his party Pejuang, other GTA members include Ibrahim Ali's Putra, Islamist party Berjasa, and the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (Iman).

The coalition has positioned itself as a "clean" alternative to Umno for Malays.

Anwar - who leads Pakatan Harapan - has been dawdling on whether he would meet Mahathir, while there are separate views in the coalition on whether to cooperate with GTA.
