Muda gets 'tough' seats, Syed Saddiq coy on candidacy

Muda has debuted its first three parliamentary candidates for the 15th general election, taking on two ministers and a former deputy minister.

Party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, meanwhile, said the status of his candidacy to defend Muar, will only be known on Wednesday.

The three contenders are Danial Abdul Majeed (Kepala Batas), teacher Siti Rahayu Baharin (Tanjong Karang) and lawyer Lim Wei Jiet (Tanjung Piai).

Kepala Batas’ incumbent is Housing and Local Government Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican while the Tanjong Karang seat is held by Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Noh Omar, both from Umno.

Meanwhile, Lim will be facing off against Tanjung Piai incumbent Wee Jeck Seng from MCA who was once the plantation industries and commodities deputy minister.

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, who is also the party's election director, said the announcement tonight follows the conclusion of discussions with Pakatan Harapan and the formation of a formal electoral pact.

"Contrary to expectations, none of the seats we are taking are urban seats. All are tough seats," said the Puteri Wangsa assemblyperson during a press conference at the party's headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

"From the discussion, Muda has agreed to unanimously support (Harapan chairperson) Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister candidate," Amira added.

No clashes

She said Muda is also committed to ensuring there will be no clash of candidates with Harapan, unlike during the last Johor polls.

"Muda also has the flexibility to use our own logo," she added.

Aside from the three parliamentary seats announced, Amira said there will be further announcements made, including for such a seat in Sabah.

On the remaining seats, Syed Saddiq said all negotiations have been concluded at the presidential council level.

Of the announced candidates, Daniel, 26, is an engineer based in Penang, while Siti Rahayu dedicates her days to teaching underprivileged children in Kuala Lumpur as the founder of Buku Jalanan Chow Kit.

Lim, who previously contested in the Tenang state seat, practises law.
