Anwar puts foot down, DAP gets Changkat Jong

The issue of the Changkat Jong state seat in Perak, which has seen a clash between DAP and Amanah as both parties announced candidates for the constituency, has been put to rest.

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim said the coalition’s top brass had reached a consensus to give the seat to DAP to field its candidate to face the upcoming general election.

“Both Amanah and DAP asked for the seat, about 10 days ago. At the state level, they have their own opinions.

“Amanah gave quite a strong argument to defend Changkat Jong.

“But after looking at everything, Harapan’s leadership reached a consensus - to give the seat to DAP,” he told reporters after meeting villagers in Chemor, Perak.

Conflicting claims

Two days ago, Amanah announced that it will field Muhaimin Sulam at Changkat Jong. Hours later, DAP announced they were fielding Badrul Hisham Badarudin there.

The issue then led to conflicting claims with Muhaimin, who is Perak Amanah vice-chairperson, saying that he had received a letter from the party president confirming that he is the Harapan candidate for the seat.

However, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke claimed that Mohamad had agreed that DAP would be assigned to Changkat Jong.

Following the clash within the coalition, Anwar refuted claims that there are cracks within Harapan, saying “it will take a day or two for them to understand.”

“In the case of Changkat Jong, Amanah gave a compelling case, DAP too.

“Finally, we - Loke, myself and other party chiefs - consulted the presidential council and decided on the matter,” he said.
