Kit Siang to Sabahans: This election to choose PM, not CM

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged Sabahans to back Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to be prime minister by voting Pakatan Harapan and not Warisan.

In a statement today, Lim said only Anwar, Umno’s Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS’ Abdul Hadi Awang were the in the running.

“Although Warisan will field candidates in Peninsular Malaysia, its president Mohd Shafie Apdal is not a candidate for the 10th prime minister of Malaysia.

“I do not question the right of Warisan to field candidates in Peninsular Malaysia, although their candidates in Peninsular Malaysia will be fighting to save or lose their deposits.

“It is important that the voters of Sabah understand that the election on Nov 19, 2022, is a parliamentary election to choose the 10th prime minister of Malaysia and form the federal government in Putrajaya, and not to choose the Sabah chief minister or to choose the Sabah state government,” said Lim (above).

He said Anwar is the better choice for Sabahans because the Pakatan Harapan chairperson “appreciates that Malaysia is a plural society with many races, languages, religions, and cultures which is an asset and not a liability.”

As of today, Warisan has pledged to nominate 52 candidates for Parliament - 26 in Sabah and Labuan and the rest in Peninsular Malaysia.

Despite being allies during the 2018 election, Warisan has distanced itself from Harapan following the signing of a confidence-and-supply agreement between Harapan and then prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in September last year.

Warisan’s strategy, according to analysts, is to win enough seats to form a “Borneo bloc” with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) that will not have to answer to leaders on the peninsula.
