A total of 16 incumbent Umno assemblypersons will be defending their seats in the upcoming 15th general election, said Perak BN chairperson Saarani Mohamad.

Saarani said this when making the announcement for the state seat candidates at Casuarina Meru Hotel, Ipoh today.

Among those defending their seats in the looming national polls include Saarani who will be defending the Kota Tampan state seat, Aznel Ibrahim (Pengkalan Hulu), Salbiah Mohamed (Temengor), Sham Mat Sahat (Alor Pongsu) and Mohamad Nor Dawoo (Selinsing).

Meanwhile, in Kuala Sepetang, Mohd Kamaruddin Abu Bakar will be retaining the seat, Jamilah Zakaria in Trong, Mohd Zolkafly Harun (Lintang), Khairudin Abu Hanipah (Belanja), Khairul Shahril Mohamed (Bota) as well as Wan Norashikin Wan Nordin (Kampung Gajah).

Shahrul Zaman Yahya, the industry, investment and corridor development exco, will also be defending the Rungkup seat, Khairuddin Tarmizi in Hutang Melintang, Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin (Changkat Jong) and Mohd Zaidi Aziz (Slim).

Meanwhile, it is notable that former menteri besar Zambry Abd Kadir who is a four-term Pangkor assemblyperson will not defend the seat but will only contest in the Lumut parliamentary seat this general election.

Former Manjung city councillor Norzaman Man will be replacing Zambry in the Pangkor state seat.

For the record, Perak has 59 state seats and BN had previously announced that the alliance will be contesting in all of the seats.

However, Saarani had only named candidates for 55 out of 59 seats, saying Aulong was previously contested by Gerakan, while Jelapang, Sungkai and Buntong were contested by MIC
