Jamal: Teresa is desperate to prevent me from contesting

BN's candidate for Sungai Besar parliamentary seat, Jamal Yunos today dismissed incumbent Seputeh MP Teresa Kok's attempt to get him disqualified from contesting in the 15th General Election (GE15) – calling it a desperate move.

This comes after the DAP leader wrote to the Election Commission recently urging the authority to disqualify Jamal (above, left), saying that she had served Jamal with a bankruptcy notice on Aug 30.

In a statement, Jamal, who is Sungai Besar Umno division chief, said Kok's legal action had just begun and it is being challenged in court by his lawyer.

"For the public's information, Kok's allegation was inaccurate and also misleading. My lawyer said that according to the Insolvency Act 1967, only when a bankruptcy order is issued (by the court) and all my appeals are rejected will I lose the eligibility to contest in the election.

"As long as such an order had not been issued, it means I am still fit to take part in the election.

"At this juncture, I am also appealing to the Court of Appeal against the High Court's decision to award compensation to Kok on July 26.

“I believe that my appeal has merit and the compensation awarded by the High Court would be set aside after it hears my case," he said.

Jamal's statement came after Kok wrote a letter to EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh, urging the commission to disqualify Jamal from running in GE15 as he has bankruptcy proceedings ongoing.

"I want to stress here that Kok's action is just a desperate move in an attempt to prevent me from being an electoral candidate, despite the clear fact that I have not been issued any bankruptcy order.

"I also hereby strongly refute her claim that the bankruptcy proceeding began on Aug 30, because the first case management for this suit would only begin this Nov 30, where my lawyer would challenge the action,” Jamal stated.
