The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) has been urged to support attempts to subject former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to a retrial.

This request was made by the Malaysian International Humanitarian Welfare Foundation (MIHWF) today during a meeting with Suhakam commissioners.

The group alleged that Najib was not given a fair trial before being convicted because of the alleged conflict of interest involving trial judge Mohd Nazlan Ghazali.

“We believe that it is the right of Najib and every Malaysian to a fair trial,” the group said in its complaint to Suhakam.

Suhakam commissioners Mariati Robert and Dr Chew Chee Ming received their complaint and promised to investigate the matter.

MIHWF vice-president Hamidah Osman told reporters later that they are approaching Suhakam because their request for answers from the authorities were ignored. 

Hamidah was among 17 Najib supporters who jointly lodged the complaint with Suhakam today. 

Pertubuhan Sahabat Ulul Amri Malaysia (PSUAM) president Syed Muhammad Imran, who was part of Hamidah’s entourage, also urged the attorney-general to confirm if judge Nazlan had a conflict of interest.

“We don’t want the case to be thrown out. We just want a retrial,” said Syed Muhammad.

Najib is currently serving his 12-year jail sentence after the Federal Court ruled against his appeal on Aug 23.

He was found guilty of criminal breach of trust, money laundering, and abuse of power involving the misappropriation of RM42 million in funds from state-owned SRC International Sdn Bhd.
