Flash floods in Shah Alam, Klang following downpour

Several locations in Klang and Shah Alam were hit by flash floods this evening following a downpour that started earlier in the afternoon.

According to initial information provided by authorities, the affected areas include Kampung Melayu Subang in Shah Alam; Meru 3, Persiaran Hamzah Alang, Jalan Kasban, Jalan Kenangan, Taman Daya, Jalan Khamis, Jalan Jabar, and SMK Meru in Klang.

Among the badly affected locations was Kampung Budiman in Puncak Alam, which saw some 20 houses flooded with water about 1m deep, causing villagers to flee to higher ground.

“A senior citizen at Kampung Budiman had to be rescued using the fire department’s boat. So far, the water has started receding, and we are monitoring the situation,” said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis.

There was also a video that had gone viral on social media, showing flood water gushing into the compound of a school in Meru.

At Taman Setia Warisan in Section U6, Kampung Melayu Subang, Norazam said some 20 more houses were also flooded about 5pm this evening but no residents had to be evacuated as of 6pm.

As several locations are still experiencing heavy rain, some had raised concerns that the floods could worsen.

V Ganabatirau, who is Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Klang parliamentary seat, posted on Facebook several photos of the Sri Muda water gate, saying that it would be closed at 4.30pm.

“For now, the water gate in Sri Muda is still open to let the water flow into the Klang River. But I was informed that it will be shut at 4.30pm as the Klang River’s water level is rising.

“If this happens, then we will have to fully depend on water pumps to clear the rainwater,” he said.
