Don't equate Kajang, PD by-polls to Sheraton Move, Saifuddin tells Azmin

GE15 | PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has shot back at Perikatan Nasional (PN) information chief Azmin Ali, who equated the Kajang and Port Dickson by-elections to the “Sheraton Move”.

In a statement today, Saifuddin Nasution said the Kajang and Port Dickson by-elections were forced by PKR’s leadership but voters still had a choice to decide if PKR could still represent them.

He said this was unlike the “Sheraton Move”, which saw Azmin defecting from Pakatan Harapan in February 2020.

“People chose to re-elect a PKR representative for Kajang (in 2014) and Port Dickson (in 2018).

“This was unlike Azmin who betrayed the voters of Gombak by winning the seat on a PKR ticket and later joining Bersatu,” said Saifuddin Nasution (above, right).

In 2020, 10 PKR MPs left the party to force the collapse of the Harapan administration. Most of the defectors joined Bersatu, which formed a new government.

Part of Azmin’s current campaign narrative involved arguing that the “Sheraton Move” was not a betrayal of the voters’ mandate.

His argument was that if the “Sheraton Move” was a form of betrayal, then the Kajang and Port Dickson by-elections were a form of betrayal as well.

Saifuddin Nasution accused Azmin of dredging up the Kajang and Port Dickson by-elections now because of his “guilt” over the “Sheraton Move”.

“I am confident that Azmin knows his betrayal should not have happened. That is why he is attacking (PKR president Anwar Ibrahim) now to ‘cleanse’ himself of the ‘traitor’ label.

“The issue now is can the voters of Gombak trust Azmin will not betray them again? If he can betray his own party which he supported for decades, what guarantee is there that he won’t betray the voters again?” asked Saifuddin Nasution.
