Peja thought 'Vietnam colonised Tambun', turns out to be Harapan flags

GE15 | With Pakatan Harapan’s flags, banners, and billboards dominating the landscape in Tambun, the seat’s incumbent Ahmad Faizal Azumu was left rattled.

The Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate, who is facing Harapan’s chairperson Anwar Ibrahim, thought that the town in Perak had been “captured by Vietnam”.

“At first, I was worried. I thought we were colonised (by Vietnam),” he joked during a press conference in Ipoh.

The former Perak menteri besar said Tambun looked as if it is “celebrating Vietnam’s national day”.

“I feel like it (flags and banners) makes Tambun town look like Vietnam…

“Vietnam's national flag looks (similar)... fortunately, they (Harapan) have a rocket-shaped big ‘A’ on their flags,” Faizal (above) added.

Analysing his opponent’s logo, the Bersatu deputy president concluded that the “rocket-shaped” alphabet reflected DAP’s “dominance” in the coalition.

Despite repeated denials and clarifications, PN and Umno continue to peddle the narrative that the predominantly-Chinese DAP, whose logo is a rocket, controlled Harapan and if the Malays voted for the coalition, it would put their race and religion at risk.

Faizal pointed out that Harapan was winning the poster war in Tambun when commenting on allegations that PN was the “richest among all the coalitions” contesting in the general election.

He said both Bersatu and PAS, which are the two main parties in PN, have to table their financial reports during their respective annual congress and it was not something confidential.

However, the poster and billboard war between Faizal and Anwar has been ongoing since the PKR president announced he would contest the seat last month.

Firing the first salvo, Faizal “welcomed” Anwar’s challenge with a billboard featuring himself and his "Ayor bukan Ayaq" slogan near Kompleks Lai Chee in Tambun.

Within a week, he put up another billboard which read “Never Lost in Tambun” along Jalan Chemur/Jalan Meru Impian. This was later replaced with the “Dari Tambun Susur Keluar ke Utara” billboard.

Earlier this week, after Anwar erected gigantic posters of himself around Tambun, one banner with the words “size does not matter” was fitted on an overhead bridge.

This morning, Faizal launched Perak PN’s manifesto, containing a range of goodies, for the state with less than 48 hours before polling.
