PKR leader moots anti-hate speech law amid rising incendiary attacks

Amid relentless attacks against the new government, PKR communications director Lee Chean Chung has mooted the tabling of an anti-hate speech law.

"Strict action should be taken against anyone found to be spouting hate speech.

"No country in the world has become a developed nation by exploiting such sentiments," he said in a statement today, adding that politicians should be working for the rakyat instead.

While criticism among politicians was nothing new, Lee (above) said the current accusations being hurled against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were bordering on hate, and thus, should be handled swiftly.

The PKR leader added that one of the slanders levelled at Anwar, which accused the latter of being a Jewish agent, would not have happened if Perikatan Nasional had won the 15th general election.

"When a political coalition does not do its job and causes its people to remain poor, it can easily distract the rakyat by playing up such sentiments.

"If PN/PAS continues to indulge in this, it will erode the rakyat's trust and will not help us to focus on developing the economy and people's prosperity.

"Thus, I propose the drafting of the anti-hate speech law, as had been implemented in other countries," he added.
