Anwar confident of passing confidence vote test

As the clock ticks down for Parliament to vote on the status of his leadership, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is confident there will be no hiccups.

The Pakatan Harapan chairperson said leaders of the other coalitions in his government have agreed to back him.

“The heads of BN, GPS, GRS, Warisan and other parties have given their commitment and we can continue (governing),” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

The vote of confidence is scheduled to be tabled during the two-day Parliament sitting starting Dec 19.

On the day he was sworn in as prime minister, Anwar himself mooted the vote of confidence after Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin raised doubts over the number of parliamentarians backing the former.

Jelebu MP Jalaluddin Alias yesterday said BN lawmakers have yet to receive explicit orders on how to handle the upcoming confidence vote.

However, he is convinced all 30 BN parliamentarians will back the confidence vote to ensure the continuity of the government.

The government Anwar is currently leading comprises of Harapan, BN, and Gabungan Parti Sarawak with a combined number of 135 MPs.

Another 13 MPs from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat, Parti Bangsa Malaysia, and two independents have also pledged support for Anwar.
