Former education minister Maszlee Malik has put to rest speculations that he would return to the government to serve in the administration of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The premier's remark asking Maszlee to get ready to end his "sabbatical soon" was instead to urge him to help PKR and the Pakatan Harapan coalition in the upcoming state elections, Maszlee (above) said.

"My Facebook post two days ago has become news and set off speculations. Anwar’s remark has been construed as a job offer by the media and the public.

"Thank you all for your kind thoughts and for having hope. I did not imply as such in the status," wrote Maszlee on Facebook today.

Maszlee was responding to news reports that he may return to serve the government, following his meeting with Anwar recently.

During the meeting, the premier reportedly told Maszlee: "Just get ready, your sabbatical will soon be over."

The remark was construed by the media as Maszlee's possible return to the government, but it was uncertain in what capacity.

To assist state polls, education reforms

According to Maszlee, Anwar's remark was to urge him to become active in assisting PKR and Harapan in facing the upcoming state polls in Harapan-led states, especially Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

"I have offered to help the menteri besar in both the states to go on a tour there, soon.

"Aside from assisting in state polls, I have also offered to help (Education Minister) Fadhlina Sidek to visit schools and meet teachers to motivate them and the students, in the post-Covid-19 pandemic era," he said.

"I hope the roadshow would channel the minister's voice, and inspire teachers to continue developing the education sector," Maszlee added.

He concluded by saying that no promises have been made as to positions for him in the government.

"What has been required is sacrifices for the rakyat, thus far."

Maszlee lost the race for the Simpang Renggam seat in the 15th general election to BN’s Hasni Mohammad.

Currently, Maszlee does not have any official position in the government.
