Sabah assembly passes two bills easily despite unresolved crisis

As the Sabah political crisis remains unresolved, the state legislative assembly today passed two bills related to gas supply and the setting up of an energy commission without much fanfare.

Both bills were tabled, debated on and passed within one and a half hours.

This comes amid political turmoil that has rocked Sabah since last Friday when the state BN announced they were withdrawing support for Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

However, this failed to dislodge Hajiji because five out of 18 Sabah BN lawmakers and seven Pakatan Harapan assemblypersons chose to stick with Hajiji.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who came back from his official trip abroad, flew to Kota Kinabalu last night with Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in tow.

After having a meeting at the Sabah chief minister’s official residence, Anwar expressed that he hopes to see Hajiji continue to head the state government.

It was later learnt that the federal government wished to broker a unity government in Sabah.

Sabah BN and Warisan have expressed that they back this proposal, but Hajiji has yet to indicate his inclination towards a unity government.

At today’s Sabah assembly special sitting, most of the Warisan and Sabah BN assemblypersons were not in attendance.

Sabah BN head Bung Moktar Radin explained that a number of BN assemblypersons will be in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Umno annual general assembly.

Meanwhile, Shafie said Warisan assemblypersons will be busy working on establishing a new special committee that will determine the leadership of the new unity government.

However, both leaders pledged their support for the Sabah Energy Commission Bill 2023 and Gas Supply Bill 2023, which were both passed in the special sitting today.

In December last year, Anwar announced that Putrajaya will hand over the gas supply regulatory power from the federal government through Petronas to Sabah.
