Express bus driver killed, 8 injured in crash

An express bus driver was killed, while eight others were injured in a road crash involving three vehicles at Km32.5 of the north-bound North-South Expressway (PLUS) yesterday.

Kulai district police chief Supt Tok Beng Yeow said the crash, which occurred at about 9.30pm, involved an express bus, a car and a lorry.

The bus driver, 65, died at the scene due to serious head and body injuries, he said in a statement today.

He said the eight injured were the bus passengers, while the lorry driver and the car driver escaped injury.

"Preliminary investigation found that the crash occurred when the lorry driver lost control of the wheel causing the vehicle to skid and crash into the road divider.

“A bus, which was heading towards the same direction, could not stop in time and hit the lorry and then veered towards the left side of the road into a drain. A car was also involved in the accident,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kulai Fire and Rescue station operations commander, Assistant Fire Chief Fairuz Helmi Mohd Ali, said 22 firemen from the station and the Skudai Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 10.17pm.

"The bus driver, identified as Ismail Tapah, 65, was confirmed dead (at the scene) by medical officers...The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital and the deceased was handed over to the police for further action," Fairuz Helmi said in a statement.

He said the rescue operation ended at 12.4 2am today.
