Michelle Yeoh becomes first Malaysian to win Golden Globe

Actress Michelle Yeoh has made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win a Golden Globe award.

On Tuesday (Dec 10), the Ipoh-born star won the Best Actress In A Musical Or Comedy Motion Picture award for her performance in the critically acclaimed film, “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.

Yeoh (above) triumphed over Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu), Emma Thompson (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande), Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris), and Margot Robbie (Babylon).

Reuters reported that at the beginning of her speech, Yeoh said she was "just going to stand here and take this all in”.

"Hollywood was a dream come true until I came here.

“It’s been an amazing journey and incredible fight to be here today, but I think it’s been worth it," she added.

“Everything Everywhere All At Once”, a sci-fi comedy about multiple universes, received the second-highest number of nominations for a feature film - six nominations total, including Yeoh’s.

Yeoh, who was recently named Time Magazine's Icon of the Year 2022, is enjoying a career upswing thanks to the success of movies like "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Everything, Everything, All at Once."

She also recently received a role with fellow Malaysian actor, Aaron Teoh in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked."

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil took to Twitter to congratulate the veteran actress for her grand win.

"What a remarkable achievement, and it was well earned. A wonderful honour for the nation," he said.

Yeoh’s co-star Ke Huy Quan also bagged an award for Best Supporting Actor.

Among other nominees for the category include Brad Pitt (Babylon), Barry Keoghan (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees Of Inisherin) and Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse).

Other notable winners that night were Austin Butler for Best Actor in a Movie Drama for playing rock legend Elvis Presley and Colin Farrel for Best Actor in A Musical Or Comedy Motion Picture for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin”.
