Saifuddin: Govt to create single agency with full authority at borders

Malaysia will soon have a single agency with full authority at the country's entry points, said Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the government was fine-tuning the set-up of the single border control agency, which had been initiated in 2018, adding that discussions were in the final stages.

“As we know, the country’s border controls involve many agencies.

“When it comes to border issues, people will think about the Immigration Department, but there are more than 20 agencies involved and (it's hard to) remember every single one.

“If we succeed in establishing a single border agency that consolidates all their functions, utilising the latest technology and without compromising security, this is the right way to go," The Star reported him as saying.

Saifuddin (above) was speaking after chairing the Causeway congestion decision coordination committee meeting in Johor Bahru.

He added that the government was studying examples and best practices from countries with single border control agencies such as the United Kingdom, the US, New Zealand, Canada and Singapore.
