Remind Muhyiddin not to be 'two-faced' on MACC probes, Fahmi tells Bersatu

Bersatu members should remind party president Muhyiddin Yassin to adopt a consistent stance over MACC's independence to probe and take action against a political party, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Following a Bersatu member's recent move to lodge a MACC report against Pakatan Harapan and BN for alleged "lavish spending" during the last 15th general election, Fahmi (above) today said all parties are free to request a probe.

"Anyone can lodge a report with MACC. But I’d like to tell Bersatu members that they have to remind their party president not to be two-faced on his position on MACC and freezing of accounts," said the Lembah Pantai MP when met at his constituency's Chinese New Year function.

"Please remind him (Muhyiddin) about fairness. If one time it is fair, it should be fair the other times as well," he added.

In 2018, Muhyiddin, who was a home minister under the first Harapan administration, supported a move led by the MACC to freeze Umno's bank accounts in connection with probes into the 1MDB scandal.

Following MACC's latest action to freeze Bersatu's accounts, Muhyiddin said the party had written to the anti-graft commission with an urgent request to regain access to its funds, citing its inability to pay salaries and rent.

MACC has not officially revealed the reasons behind the investigation but sources privy to the investigation told Malaysiakini that the probe was linked to financial contributions from 10 contractors to Bersatu.

Fahmi said the government has yet to hold any discussions on putting MACC under the jurisdiction of Parliament, as Harapan promised since GE14.

“There have been no discussions. For now, let MACC carry out its duties,” he added.

He was responding to Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim’s remarks that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should immediately fulfil Harapan’s promise on the matter.

“The Pasir Gudang MP is someone I personally respect a lot. His views will certainly be taken into consideration by the party.

“However, for now as it stands, MACC must continue to carry out its duties,” Fahmi said.

Earlier it was reported that Hassan said Anwar often talks about good governance and combating corruption, wastage and breach of trust.

“Those talks are meaningless if reform is not carried out,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
