'Police sergeant found dead in Bayan Lepas had family problems'

The police sergeant who was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds last month in Bayan Lepas was having family problems, said Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

Speaking to reporters after attending an event at Bukit Aman this morning, Acryl said the district police will be seeking an inquest into the incident.

“From an investigative standpoint, the case has been classified as sudden death. Penang police completed the investigation and received the post-mortem report.

"They have prepared the necessary documents to apply for an inquest to determine the cause of the incident," he said.

Regarding the standard operating procedure (SOP) for using firearms by police personnel, Acryl said it has been applied for a long time and should be complied with.

“What happened, of course, is out of control. However, it does not stop us from finding a way to improve the SOP to make sure no untoward incidents occur," he added.

Acryl also said the police, through the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department's counselling unit, were constantly monitoring the mental health of its officers and personnel - based on reports from their superiors.

According to Balik Pulau district police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal, a police sergeant was discovered dead with gunshot wounds behind a police station in Bayan Lepas on Feb 19.

The sergeant, who was found at approximately 3.30pm, had gunshot wounds to the neck, chest, and head, and a pistol was discovered at the scene.

Kamarul stated that the deceased was a member of the Bayan Lepas police station.
