PM on Muhyiddin: If all MACC cases 'political', can no one be arrested?

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has questioned whether critics will allow the MACC to arrest or investigate anyone over corruption if every probe is deemed "politically motivated".

He said this while denying once again that the MACC's probe on Bersatu leaders is politically motivated, amid expectations that party president Muhyiddin Yassin will be arrested and charged.

"To say every case is politically motivated, does it mean (the MACC) can't make arrests?

"That all big corruption cases should be let go?" he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

As of writing, Muhyiddin is being questioned at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya and speculation is rife that he would be arrested today and charged tomorrow.

The MACC had previously questioned Muhyiddin in regard to the Jana Wibawa corruption scandal, although the former prime minister claimed then that he was just a witness and not a suspect.

Last week the graft buster arrested Bersatu treasurer Mohamed Salleh Bajuri in relation to the use of the party’s funds.

It has also charged Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the party’s former information chief, and a division deputy chief for corruption.

No interference

Anwar said he has never interfered in any agency’s work and that he too remains in the dark.

The MACC only informs the prime minister when it plans to call in anyone with political implications, he added.

Regardless, he said all MACC cases should be viewed on a case-by-case basis.

"I want to stress here that all who want this country to be clean and free of corruption must look at each case individually, whether there is political prosecution or based on facts.

"What I have said all this while in regard to Jana Wibawa and flood mitigation, that is based on documents from the Finance Ministry, not the MACC or the Attorney-General's Chambers," he added.
