Budget 2023 passes policy stage with voice vote

PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's revised Budget 2023 passed through its first hurdle today when it passed the policy stage debate via a voice vote.

The vote was called after Anwar wrapped up the policy stage debate for the Finance Ministry.

The vote sailed through smoothly, as most opposition MPs were not in the Dewan Rakyat and were instead at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to show solidarity with Muhyiddin Yassin (Perikatan Nasional-Pagoh) who was being questioned by the graft buster.

The budget will now go to the committee stage where MPs will scrutinise allocations in greater detail, instead of making generalised debates.

Budget 2023 had originally been tabled by the previous administration in October last year.

However, Parliament was dissolved before the bill could be debated or passed.

After the change of government, Anwar first passed a fiscal bill in December to keep Putrajaya running, before finally tabling a complete budget on Feb 24.
