Umno Ulama Council executive secretary Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali has been appointed as a religious adviser to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

According to sources from the Deputy Prime Minister's Office, Khairuddin was appointed to hold the position on a pro bono basis and he will not be receiving a salary.

"He serves as a religious adviser without pay," said the source.

Khairuddin (above) is a former plantation industries and commodity minister and a former Kuala Nerus MP for PAS.

He graduated with a PhD in Islamic Studies from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2011.

Before that, he had studied at the University of Jordan majoring in Arabic Language and Literature, then did his Master's in the same field at Aal al-Bayt University, Mafraq, Jordan in 2000.

In the 15th general election, Khairuddin attempted to defend the Kuala Nerus parliamentary seat as a BN candidate after declaring his exit from PAS but lost the contest.
