Pahang to table anti-hopping bill next month

The anti-party hopping bill is expected to be tabled at the Pahang State Legislative Assembly next month and state assemblymen are expected to give their support with a majority of two-thirds.

Speaker Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said it was based on the agreement of all Pahang assemblypersons after a briefing on the Constitution (Amendment) No 3 Act 2022 (Act A1663) (Anti-Party Hopping) from the Legal Adviser's Office.

“All (people’s representatives) are satisfied and don’t want the mandate given by the people to be disobeyed and (don’t want anyone) to simply jumping ship just for personal gain.

“There are only a few things that need to be fine-tuned according to the situation in the Pahang assembly,” he told a press conference after attending the briefing today.

Since the Pahang assembly is scheduled to convene on May 8, Sharkar said the notice regarding the bill must be received by the state assembly office by April 22.

On matters that still need to be refined, Sharkar said that it involves the positions of the five assemblypersons who were appointed without going through the election process.

Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail previously said that the state government is ready to table an anti-party hopping bill at the State Legislative Assembly if it gets the support of the opposition.

Pahang is among the states that had not adopted the anti-party hopping law for assemblypersons since it came into force at the Federal level on Oct 5, 2022, after being passed by the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara and receiving the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
