PM: No issue declaring assets, I have already done so

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he has no qualms declaring his assets as it was already public knowledge.

He reminded his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he had already declared his assets last year prior to the 15th general election. 

This comes after the nonagenarian demanded Anwar (above, right) to declare how much he was worth when the latter served as his deputy prime minister from 1993 to 1998, claiming he was among the “past leaders” accused of cronyism.

“I don’t have a problem (with declaring assets). I was one of the people who did (last year). 

“I declared RM11 million, and out of that, RM10 million was for a house in Segambut. 

“It’s not a secret, it is public knowledge,” he told reporters at the Madani Aidilfitri celebration at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur today.

The Pakatan Harapan chairperson declared a net asset of RM11.18 million in November last year, of which RM828,667.83 was in cash assets and RM10.35 million in real estate properties.

Anwar had previously reiterated calls for Mahathir to reveal how much the nonagenarian and his family are worth, which is now the subject of an RM150 million defamation suit.

In response, Mahathir took to Twitter to dare the prime minister to reveal his own wealth during his tenure as deputy prime minister.

‘Everyone knows’

Anwar has recently been accusing Mahathir of owning assets worth billions of ringgit in the form of planes, ships, and children owning overseas bank accounts - yet not using these resources to help the Malays in the nation.

He alleged today that Mahathir’s wealth too was publicly known.

“He has planes, ships, and companies worth billions of ringgit. Everyone knows,” he said.

Mahathir, 97, and Anwar, 75, have been embroiled in a bitter feud spanning more than two decades ever since the former sacked the latter in 1998.

There was a brief hiatus when the pair joined hands in the 2018 general election to oust then-prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Meanwhile, Anwar reiterated his firm stance that Malaysia must be saved from “penyakau” (thieves). 

“This need clear, firm political will and not inciting issues on race, religion, character, moral, and values.

“I understand these issues and I call on the rakyat to come together and stop it (corruption),” he said.

The Tambun MP added that he has ordered the Inland Revenue Board, Bank Negara, and the police’s Commercial Crimes Department to take action against corruption. 

Over 20,000 people attended today’s Madani hari raya celebration organised by the The Federal Territories Islamic Department and the The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council.

Over 100 stalls were set up to provide food and drinks for all the attendees, which included rendang, lemang, tomato rice, barbecued lamb and chicken, satay, curry laksa, roti canai among others.
