Former EPF office building in PJ catches fire again

A building at Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya where the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) used to operate has caught fire.

According to initial information, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call about the incident at 10.37am.

Following this, they dispatched firefighters from Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Penchala, and Puchong fire stations to the scene.

“We are also receiving assistance from the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department,” a fire department source told Malaysiakini.

In a statement to the media later, the department’s assistant director (operations) Hafisham Mohd Noor said firefighters managed to control the blaze at 11.08am.

“The fire occurred on the fourth and fifth floor of the building, and firefighters successfully controlled the blaze at 11.08am.

“No casualty was reported,” he said.

Meanwhile, the EPF Corporate Communications Department said the building is currently unoccupied.

“The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) announces that one of the floors in its building in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, caught fire this morning.

“The Fire and Rescue Department is currently on site and has the fire under control, and will be investigating the cause of the fire. The building is currently empty and unoccupied, and no injuries have been reported at this time.

“Further details will be provided when available,” it said in a statement.

A major blaze occurred at the premises in 2018, forcing EPF to shift its operations to another venue.

Several videos of the latest blaze have also been shared on social media platforms. They show the building along the Federal Highway engulfed in flames.

Smoke is also visible from several kilometres away.
