Six of nine overlapping Harapan-BN seats are in three states

Six out of nine overlapping seat claims between Pakatan Harapan and BN for the upcoming state elections involve three states - Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Kedah, according to various Umno leaders.

Malaysiakini understands the seats include two in Selangor, two in Negeri Sembilan, and two in Kedah.

Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Jalaludin Alias confirmed there are two seats still being negotiated in the Harapan-led state.

“Just two (overlapping seats). We leave it to the presidential council to decide,” Jalaludin (above) told Malaysiakini, without revealing which two seats remain unresolved.

Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said any outstanding negotiations at the state level will be taken over by top central leaders from Harapan and BN.

Amirudin, who is also a PKR vice-president, said the matter will be raised to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as Harapan chairperson, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as BN chairperson.

Aside from Selangor, Amirudin said the central leadership will also decide on a number of seats in Negeri Sembilan, Penang, and Terengganu.

In Perikatan Nasional-led Kedah, state Umno sources revealed that two out of 36 state seats were unresolved.

“There are two seats that we failed to resolve (seat allocation).

“We’re leaving it to the parties’ top leaders to decide on the matter,” the sources told Malaysiakini.

On the east coast

Over on the east coast, where Harapan has had no elected state representatives since the 14th general election (GE14), two different situations are shaping up in the PAS-led states.

Without revealing the specifics of how they reached an agreement, Kelantan Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said discussions were concluded smoothly and there are no overlapping claims between Harapan and BN.

However, in Terengganu, state Umno chief Ahmad Said hinted at “clashes” with PKR - led by its vice-president and state chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad - during the negotiation process.

Ahmad reportedly urged PKR to measure the party’s strength in Terengganu before demanding to contest more seats.

In GE14, PKR and Amanah each contested 11 seats, while Bersatu - as a Harapan component party at the time - was allocated the remaining 10 seats.

All of Harapan’s candidates were defeated by PAS or BN candidates.
