S'wak aims for 'fully sustainable' public transport by 2030

The Sarawak government aims to have "almost all" its public transport powered by green energy by 2030, said state Premier Abang Johari Openg.

"By 2030, I think almost all of our public transport will be (powered) either by hydrogen or electricity. Hopefully, Kuching will be clean without carbon," he said at the Shape the World Summit 2023 gala dinner in Kuching, last night, according to Borneo Post.

Abang Johari (above) said these vehicles will be powered with energy sourced from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectricity through public-private cooperation.

The Sarawak government, he said, is already working with Shell to generate power for an offshore platform harnessed from solar and wind energy farms.

A floating solar farm project at the Batang Ai Dam was also supplementing the grid, he said.

"In other words, what I am sharing are the solutions to climate change. We've got hydropower, solar, and wind energy, and of course, the supply of natural resources," he said.

Abang Johari said that Sarawak has huge potential in generating green energy because of its landmass and that 70 percent of the state's electricity needs was fulfilled by hydroelectricity.

Since becoming chief minister of Sarawak in 2017, Abang Johari has been aggressively promoting a hydrogen-powered economy.

The state government aims to introduce its hydrogen-powered autonomous rapid transit system for Kuching by end-2025.
