'Isteri PM' number plate by Sabah govt, not sought by Wan Azizah

A special car registration number that reads “Isteri YAB Perdana Menteri” (prime minister’s wife), which recently went viral on social media, was not made at Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s request.

This is according to a statement issued by the Sabah state government to clarify the issue, as reported by a local newspaper.

Sabah state secretary Safar Untong reportedly said the special plate was provided by the state government as a usual practice when top leaders and their spouses are on official visits to Sabah.

“The provided vehicle facilities include placing car plates with the designation of the position of the guest and their wife who use the vehicle.

“The Sabah state government provides vehicles according to the suitability of the travel schedule while in Kota Kinabalu.

“Therefore, the displayed license plate was not at the request of Wan Azizah,” Safar said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

A photo of the special number plate started circulating on social media yesterday and attracted criticisms against the wife of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
