PN picks top former civil servant to contest in Selangor

Perikatan Nasional has announced former domestic trade and consumer affairs secretary-general Jamil Salleh as its candidate for Dengkil in the upcoming Selangor legislative assembly elections.

This was announced by PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin at a rally in Sepang, Selangor last night. Jamil retired in 2019 after 35 years in the civil service.

Dengkil is one of six seats won by Bersatu during the 2018 Selangor legislative assembly elections. The incumbent assemblyperson for Dengkil is Adhif Syan Abdullah.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin also announced that PN will be fielding former Selangor Umno Youth chief Suhaimi Mohd Ghazali for the Sungai Pelek seat.

Suhaimi is currently the Sepang Bersatu Youth chief and was once the Dengkil state assemblyperson for the 2004-2008 term.

Sungai Pelek is a constituency where just over half the constituents are Malay and the incumbent, Ronnie Liu, won the seat on a Pakatan Harapan ticket in 2018.

Liu left DAP last month. DAP has never fielded the same candidate twice for Sungai Pelek.

Jamil and Suhaimi are the first two PN candidates that have been announced for Selangor.

According to Berita Harian, Muhyiddin told supporters that a PN victory in Selangor was crucial to send a message to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He said after taking the reins for eight months, Anwar has failed to design a plan to help the country's economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The price of goods is increasing... I'm not saying it is easy (to resolve), but the people are asking what Anwar is doing about it," said Muhyiddin.
