Harapan, BN youth wings gather in solidarity with Selangor sultan

Some 50 people gathered outside the Shah Alam mosque after Friday prayers today to show support for Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The gathering, comprising leaders and members of the Selangor Pakatan Harapan and BN youth wings, came following the saga involving the caretaker Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's alleged insult to the Selangor ruler.

“We gathered here today to defend our sultan and our state.

“We want to make it known that we do not want political figures with cheap tactics to come to Selangor, where they will mock our sultan.

“Enough with the negative sentiments. You can only come here (to Selangor) if you want to bring in good policies from your party,” said Selangor Harapan Youth chief Danial Al Rashid, likely referring to Sanusi.

According to Danial, they will submit a memorandum in support of the state ruler to the Selangor palace in Shah Alam, next Monday at 10am.

The police presence at the demonstration, which began at 2pm and lasted for about 25 minutes, was notably minimal.

Last week, Sanusi got into hot water after comparing the Kedah sultan with his Selangor counterpart, whom he alleged had chosen a “lousy” menteri besar.

Multiple police reports were lodged against Sanusi, and he was eventually investigated for playing a 3R (race, religion, and royalty) sentiment in his speech.

Later, the Perikatan Nasional election director apologised to the Selangor ruler, claiming that his words were spun by “agents” of Harapan and BN.

On July 18, police arrested Sanusi in the wee hours of the morning at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur to face two charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act.

He claimed trial for both charges.

If found guilty, Sanusi can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to RM5,000, or both for each offence.
