PAS' non-muslim candidate wants to promote 'PAS for All'

STATE POLLS | Inspired by PAS' motto, 'PAS for All', a former Gerakan Youth leader has joined the Islamic party and is contesting at a Chinese-majority seat in Penang.

Andrew Teow, a PAS Non-Muslim Supporters Wing (DHPP) member, is contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner in the Sungai Puyu seat.

He is one of the three non-Muslim candidates from PAS contesting in Penang.

PAS' ally, Bersatu, also fielded four non-bumiputera candidates in Penang.

Contacted by Malaysiakini yesterday, Teow applauded the 'PAS for All' motto.

"The concept of 'PAS for all' is that they advocate not just about taking care of their own race, but also looking after the interests of the Chinese and Indian communities."

"It's important because I have the opportunity to bridge the gap between our Chinese community and the Malay Muslims."

"I want to repay PAS"

The 39-years old was once a spokesperson for Gerakan Youth and later joined Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) before switching to PAS.

He said the 'PAS for All' motto is also why he joined PAS.

The claims of PAS being an extreme party are not valid, Teow said.

According to Teow, he was not expected to be nominated to contest in the state polls.

"I was not mentally prepared for it," he said.

He believes his activism and contributions to NGOs led him to be nominated.

He confessed that he was worried about how the voters would perceive him but eventually decided to accept the candidacy to promote the concept of ‘PAS for all'.

"I want to give back to PAS in my lifetime," he said.

Teow is contesting against Phee Syn Tze from Harapan. Syn Tze is the daughter of former Sungai Puyu assemblyperson Phee Boon Poh.
