Muhyiddin's acquittal will set bad precedent - Umno man

Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil has urged prosecutors to appeal against the High Court decision to acquit Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Isham (above, right) warned that the High Court decision could set a bad precedent and allow cabinet ministers to seek bribes from contractors in exchange for government contracts.

"I do not agree with this. Taxpayers cannot support ministers who seek bribes in the guise of political donations.

"If bribes are received through the party account, it is for personal rather than public interest.

"Malaysians of all stripes do not pay their taxes in support of any political party," he said in a statement.

Muhyiddin was today acquitted of four abuse of power charges under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

He was accused of soliciting RM235.5 million from three companies and one individual between March 1, 2020 and Aug 20, 2021.

Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the charges were defective and did not provide enough details for Muhyiddin to mount a defence.

Prosecutors have vowed to appeal.

Fair justice system

Isham said the justice system must be seen as fair, adding that the courts had convicted former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak on similar charges.

"When it comes to Umno and Najib, they are wrong. When it happens to other parties, everything is okay.

"A RM200 million bribe can enter a party's account (without any repercussions).

"What is happening to this country?" he asked.
