Muda to back Amanah in Pulai, Simpang Jeram polls

Muda will support Amanah candidates in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections on Sept 9.

Its Johor chief Azrol Rajani said this is to honour the memory of the seats' incumbent - the late domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub.

"We hope the Amanah candidates will win big in the by-elections to continue his legacy for the sake of the people.

"Johor Muda is committed to the people's aspirations and will continue to fight for justice and changes for a better future," Azrol was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

On Saturday, Amanah announced that Johor Amanah vice chairperson Suhaizan Kaiat will contest the Pulai parliamentary seat, while engineer Nazri Abdul Rahman will stand for the Simpang Jeram state seat.

Suhaizan was also Salahuddin's former political secretary, while Nazri was a former aide of the minister in Simpang Jeram.

Respect for Salahuddin

Elaborating, Azrol said Muda's decision to not contest the by-elections was to respect Salahuddin's contributions.

"Salahuddin had contributed a lot to Johor Muda since the party's inception. He gave a lot of feedback and advice to us during the early days."

The by-elections are being held following Salahuddin’s death on July 23.

The 61-year-old Amanah deputy president passed away at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar a day after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

Nominations are slated for Aug 26 while early voting is on Sept 5.

Muda made its electoral debut as a "third force" option during the Aug 12 state polls but failed to retain any of its deposits.

Notably, three of their 19 candidates garnered more votes than the majority obtained by the winning candidate.
