The upcoming Simpang Jeram by-election is seen as a "gateway" for the "Perikatan Nasional wave" to spread to Johor, said Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Speaking to reporters after the launch of the PN campaign machinery in Bakri, Johor, last night, Sanusi (above) urged voters to "experiment" to ensure that the "PN wave" is maintained and send a strong signal to Pakatan Harapan and BN.

"This wave that we saw during the (Aug 12) state elections will hit Johor and reach Singapore. We will start here (in Simpang Jeram).

"Then, we will take over the state in another two and a half years," he said.

Simpang Jeram is a 51 percent Malay majority state constituency near the town of Muar, in the northwestern part of Johor and near PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin's stronghold of Pagoh.

‘Teach those liars a lesson’

Between Simpang Jeram (state) and the Pulai (parliamentary) polls, PN is expected to do better in the former.

Sanusi said the Simpang Jeram election is very significant for the country because it is an opportunity for the rakyat to voice their displeasure against the "liars".

"The signal (we are sending) will start in Simpang Jeram. God willing, 'Bangsa Johor' can teach those liars a lesson.

"I hope Simpang Jeram will accept the 'aura' from the other six states (which had elections on Aug 12)," he added.

Sanusi said it was not impossible for PN to penetrate Johor, where BN has a two-thirds majority in the state legislative assembly.

"It is not impossible. Penang is DAP's strongest state in the world. Who would have thought (PN) could win 11 seats?

"No one thought of it, except me because I'm their neighbour," he added.

The Simpang Jeram by-election will take place on Sept 9. Nominations are this Saturday.
