Umno Youth to petition King to review Najib's IPIC charges

Umno Youth will be submitting a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong calling for charges against former premier Najib Abdul Razak to be reviewed.

Wing chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said this was following a lack of progress into calls for a probe into allegations that prosecutors had wanted to drop charges against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah on a 1MDB-linked case.

"To this day, we have not had any response from the attorney-general. So our next course of action, which will be more aggressive, is to collect (memoranda) nationwide calling for a review of the case which is still at the prosecution stage," he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

"It will be submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to get advice on what should be the next step,” he added.

Akmal was speaking after chairing an Umno Youth exco meeting at the party headquarters.

Previously a purported leaked memo from 2019 allegedly had prosecutors recommending to then-attorney-general Tommy Thomas to drop six charges against Najib and Irwan.

This was in relation to charges over RM6.6 billion in payments by the government to the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) - which is linked to the 1MDB scandal.

The memo purportedly stated that the charges would not hold up in court.

Thomas said he could not recall the purported memo, while the Attorney-General's Chambers is probing the leak.

Umno Youth had previously lodged police reports nationwide urging an investigation into the memo.
