Muda, PSM postpone announcement of their anti-Zahid rally

Muda and PSM have called off plans to gather at Parliament tomorrow (Thursday) to unveil their plans for a protest against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's corruption charges being withdrawn.

Initially, Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi had said on Monday that leaders from both parties would gather at Parliament on Thursday to submit a memorandum and announce plans for a joint protest with civil society organisations (CSO).

However, Amir told Malaysiakini this evening that they have not yet met with the CSOs to discuss their next course of action.

Hence, the announcement has been postponed.

"Muda, PSM and CSOs will have a meeting and discussion soon. Once we decide the date, we will announce it to the media," he said when contacted.

When asked if this plan is expected to be postponed to next week, he responded, "most likely”.

Malaysiakini was made to understand that a meeting between Muda, PSM and CSOs is currently underway in Kuala Lumpur as of writing time.

Asked further if the two parties would attend the PN Youth’s rally scheduled on Sept 16, Amir indicated that it would most likely be a no.

"No discussion (yet), 80 to 90 percent won't join (PN rally)," he said.

PN was the first to announce plans for a protest over Zahid being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) after prosecutors withdrew charges in his Yayasan Akalbudi case.

However, after meeting with police, PN appeared to be changing course, calling their Sept 16 event a "gathering" to celebrate Malaysia Day.

The red-shirt group led by Jamal Md Yunos is planning a counter rally against PN.

Separately, Bersih is also planning its own campaign over Zahid’s DNAA.

It is unclear if Bersih will be one of the CSOs engaged by Muda and PSM.
