Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari is expected to be appointed the domestic trade and cost of living minister, to replace the late Salahuddin Ayub.

When contacted, sources from Amanah confirmed this with Malaysiakini.

"The party leadership will discuss the matter with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"As far as I know, Adly (above) will replace Salahuddin, and not anyone from Dewan Negara (senator)," said a source.

Salahuddin, who is former Amanah deputy president, died on July 23, a day after he had undergone surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

Adly, 52, is the sole Amanah vice-president who won last year's 15th general election.

The former Malacca chief minister also won the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat with an 890-vote majority in a four-way contest.

Shoes to fill

According to another source, Adly is seen as a young leader who is capable of continuing the legacy of his predecessor.

"He's young and experienced in administration," said the source.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the Amanah leadership for confirmation on the matter.

Meanwhile, another party source said that Pakatan Harapan’s Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof will be appointed deputy minister in the defence ministry to replace Adly.

"If Adly becomes a minister, then his vacancy may be filled by Azli.

"In any case, the party leadership will make the final decision after discussing it with the prime minister."
