Man probed over 'heated exchange' for chilli sauce packs at fast food joint

Police are probing a man who got into a "heated exchange" with the staff of a McDonald's restaurant over chilli sauce packets, in Ayer Keroh, Malacca.

According to Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit, the suspect is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation as the 19-year-old female worker feared for her safety following the incident.

"Initial investigations revealed that there are two versions of the story.

“The first is the man's version, where he claimed he was charged for extra packets of chilli sauce when he was purchasing food at the restaurant.

"The worker, however, claimed she was forced by the man to sell him 10 packets of chilli sauce for RM10, although she told him they were not allowed to be sold as they are free," Christopher was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia.

According to him further, the incident happened between 10pm and 11pm at the McDonald's outlet in Taman Buaya on Sept 22.

The teenager lodged a police report as she feared for her safety after the man's recording of the encounter went viral on social media.

It is learnt that the suspect is a former Bersatu member who contested for a state seat in Negeri Sembilan in the 14th general election.

Yesterday, McDonald's Malaysia provided clarification into the incident, which it said stemmed from the man being unintentionally provided with insufficient packets of chilli sauce for his order.

Upon request, however, the man was given extra packets of the condiment, it said.

"However, at that point, the customer became extremely irate and verbally aggressive toward our staff.

“The customer insisted on paying for the additional 10 packets of chilli sauce and urged our crew to issue a receipt for the purchase.

"Despite our crew's attempts to clarify that chilli sauce is provided free of charge, the customer angrily insisted on being charged for it," McDonald's said, adding that the man later made the said receipt viral, with his own spin on the issue on social media.

Christopher added that the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has issued a compound against Gerbang Alaf Sdn Bhd (McDonald's Malaysia) for not displaying price tags on chilli sauce packets at the premises.
