The Alor Setar High Court has given the police and federal government 14 days to hand over medical reports and other documents on university student S Vinosiny’s death to her family.
On Sunday, Judge Mahazan Mat Taib allowed the discovery application by the deceased’s father R Sivakumar, who sought the reports to prepare the main negligence lawsuit over the 20-year-old’s death.
Vinosiny died in her dorm room at Universiti Utara Malaysia's Sintok, Kedah campus on May 21 last year.
The accounting student was suspected to have suffered a fatal electric shock, something which the family claimed was backed up by injuries on her body and the post-mortem findings.
Against the background of the university being allegedly not forthcoming over her death, her family had announced their intent to file a civil court action over the university’s alleged negligence linked to her death.
The family’s counsel, M Manoharan confirmed the Alor Setar High Court decision for the authorities to hand over medical, chemist, police reports and all photographs taken in the course of investigation into Vinosiny’s death.
The lawyer explained that the police and government have 14 days from Sunday to comply with the court order.
The court also made no order as to costs.
“The court granted (the family’s discovery application) after I submitted the importance of these documents for the lawyers and family to prepare for a potential suit.
“After getting all these documents, we shall file (the negligence lawsuit),” Manoharan said.
During a 40-minute meeting with the family 10 days after the incident last year, UUM officials extended their apology.
