Alor Setar City Council won't issue new massage parlour licence

The Kota Setar Land and District Office and Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) will no longer issue licences for new massage parlours to operate.

In a notice on the MBAS Facebook page, it was announced by Alor Setar mayor Mohd Yusri Md Baud that this was in accordance with a decision reached by the Kedah executive council on June 21.

In the posting, the MBAS said that this was intended to curb immoral activities.

According to a report by China Press, Mohd Yusri (above) said that this directive only involves new licences.

All existing massage parlours can still renew their licence as long as they obey the rules.

Mohd Yusri also said that this directive only involved massage centres, and did not include spa centres.

On Jan 1, all gambling and lottery premises were no longer allowed to operate in Kedah, following the state government’s move not to renew their licences.

On Nov 14, 2022, Menteri Besar Sanusi Md Nor announced that the government would no longer approve gambling licences, in addition to limiting the sale of liquor on all premises, especially in rural areas in the state.

He said at the time that the move was intended to tackle social ills caused by gambling, such as the collapse of family institutions.
